-- During the Early Modern Period (1500-1800) water would go bad on long sea voyages as it was stored in wooden barrels.
-- Sailors started bringing beer because the alcohol helped it from going bad so quickly.
-- This eventually led to sailors bringing rum since the higher alcohol content allowed it to last even longer.
-- The British Royal Navy would give out rations of rum to their sailors.
-- Naturally, sailors would save up their daily 8-ounce rum rations in order to acquire an amount that would deliver desirable effects.
-- In order to combat drunken sailors, the British Vice-Admiral "Old Grog" Edward Vernon, ordered that the daily rum ration be mixed with water in a 4:1 water to rum ratio.
-- This drink, known as grog, was less potent and did not last as long because of the lower alcohol content. Old Grog recommended that the sailors purchase sugar and limes to make it more palatable.
